Factoring vs. Merchant Cash Advances: The Expensive Lesson I Learned Too Late

I’ve been there. Payroll was due Friday and cash was tight, so I took four merchant cash advances at a brutal 42% effective rate. It got us through, but there was a far better option I discovered too late.

That option is factoring.

The Real Difference

Factoring is built for one situation: You’ve done the work, invoiced the customer, and they’ll pay in 30, 60, or 90 days. The money is already yours — it’s just not here yet. You sell the unpaid invoice to a factor, get most of the cash now, and the factor collects when the customer pays. No borrowing against future sales. Just fixing the timing on money you’ve already earned.

Merchant cash advances do the opposite. They advance money against sales you haven’t made yet. The cost stacks fast, especially when you take a second advance to cover the first. Same problem on the surface — “I need cash for payroll” — but one borrows from tomorrow while the other accelerates today.

Why I Chose the MCA

Because factoring takes time to set up, and I went looking when I was already desperate. The MCA wired money the next day. Speed won.

Cash advances don’t win because they’re better. They win because they’re fast — and they count on you shopping for solutions only when you’re out of runway.

The Prepared Move

Factoring is like insurance. Build the relationship before you need it. Meet factors while things are calm, get the paperwork ready, and keep that door warm. The prepared version of you never touches a high-cost MCA.

What still frustrates me is that the fair tool is the slower one to access, while the predatory option is instant. That gap catches too many good businesses.

At Berryhill Financial, we help owners find the right funding tool — not just the fastest one. If you’re holding invoices and feeling the timing crunch, let’s talk now while you still have options. Preparation beats desperation every time.

Also, what company did you have when you took 4 MCAs?
