Most people hear "blue economy" and file it next to conservation. Brooke Lynn Elzweig would like the capital markets to stop doing that.

Elzweig founded Brackish Strategies after coming up through environmental engineering and coastal restoration, with a master's from Duke along the way. The firm advises growth-stage companies working where ocean, coastal and climate infrastructure meets capital markets, which in practice means helping them raise capital that actually fits how the business builds and earns.

Her framing of the category in this episode is worth sitting with. Shipping and maritime. Defense and subsea security. Offshore wind development. AI infrastructure, ocean monitoring, and data. In her words, real companies with real revenue.

The gap between that and where capital sits is the interesting part. Roughly $175 billion a year is the estimated need. Philanthropic funding covers less than 1%. Private finance, less than 0.1%.

Anyone who has placed a deal will recognize the shape of that. It isn't that nobody wants to fund these companies. It's that the instruments on the shelf were built for different businesses, different build cycles, different revenue profiles, and different risk. When the right product doesn't exist, companies take the wrong one. We watch a smaller version of that play out in small business finance every week.
