Community development financial institutions (CDFIs) are lenders certified by the U.S. Treasury’s CDFI Fund to serve low-income and underserved communities. Nearly 1,300 organizations hold the certification (CDFI Fund, September 2026).
Many microlenders are also SBA Microloan intermediaries. SBA microloans go up to $50,000, average about $13,000 and run up to six years. Each card shows the lender’s loan sizes, loan types and where it lends.

Types of loans these lenders make
Most of these lenders offer more than one product. Knowing which one you need narrows the list to the lenders that make it.
Microloans
Small loans for startups and very small businesses, often from lenders that also offer business advising.
SBA Microloans
Up to $50,000 through SBA-approved nonprofit intermediaries, averaging about $13,000, with terms of up to six years.
Term Loans
A lump sum repaid in fixed installments. Many CDFIs lend well above microloan size for growth, equipment and working capital.
SBA Community Advantage
SBA 7(a) loans from mission-focused lenders. SBA stopped approving new Community Advantage licenses in May 2025; existing lenders still make these loans.
Credit-Building Loans
Small loans designed to help owners build a credit history so they can qualify for larger financing later.
0% Crowdfunded Loans
Kiva’s U.S. loans of $1,000 to $15,000 carry no interest or fees and are funded by individual lenders.
CDFI and microlender FAQs
A community development financial institution is a lender certified by the U.S. Treasury’s CDFI Fund. To qualify, its primary mission must be community development, it must mainly serve low-income or underserved markets, and it must offer business advising or other development services alongside its loans.
A loan of up to $50,000 made through an SBA-approved nonprofit intermediary. The average is about $13,000, terms run up to six years and rates are generally 8% to 13%. It can pay for working capital, inventory, supplies, furniture, fixtures, machinery and equipment, but not existing debt or real estate.
On SBA-backed loans, anyone paid to refer or package a deal must sign a compensation agreement that goes to SBA, and fees must be reasonable for the work done. For a CDFI’s own loan products, policies vary: some welcome referral partners and others ask for a referral from a partner such as an SBDC. Ask each lender directly.
Often. SBA says microloan intermediaries typically require collateral and the owner’s personal guarantee. Requirements for other CDFI loans vary by lender.
It means the lender says on its own site that it is certified by the CDFI Fund. Lenders without the label may still be certified, so check the CDFI Fund’s certified list or ask the lender.
No. Funder Intel is an independent directory. We are not a lender, do not make credit decisions and do not offer loans. We may earn a fee from partners (marked “Featured”), which never changes the information shown.
